Building Relationships with Parents and Families — (Unit 1)
Saturday, February 27, 2010
Building a strong relationship with parents will help ensure quality care. Learn how you can help parents grow in their challenging new role as parents
of young children. Learn ways to get parents more involved in your program, and ways teachers, providers and parents can work together to support children's development.
Building a Healthy Brain: Giving Children a Foundation for Lifelong Success — (Unit 2)
March 13, 2010
The first three years of life are critical to brain development. Learn how to support and promote healthy brain development by using the 5 R's:
Relationships, Respect, Repetition, Routines, and Responsive Interactions. We'll also discuss the effect of negative experiences and abuse on brain development.
Social Emotional Development in Infants, Toddlers and Their Families — (Unit 3)
March 27, 2010
Social-emotional development begins at birth. The foundation laid in the first three years helps a child
develop meaningful relationships and supports learning. When children have difficulty acquiring social-emotional skills,
they are at increased risk emotionally, developmentally and academically. We will examine the relationship between stages
of child development and parent development, and how to assist young children in acquiring social-emotional skills.
Understanding Temperament for Parents and Providers — (Unit 4)
April 24, 2010
Temperament is a child's way of interacting with the world around them. It is not "good" or "bad" but "goodness of fit"
to parents and caregivers' own temperament is important to avoid personality clashes and behavior difficulties. Increasing
our understanding of temperament, including our own temperaments will help support a child's healthy development.
The Influence of Culture on Caregiving — (Unit 5)
May 1, 2010
Explore the many ways in which culture influences parents’ child-rearing choices and daily routines. This session provides an
opportunity for caregivers to explore their own culture beliefs and how those beliefs influence their work with families. Discuss
strategies for learning more about families’ home cultures, and how to decide whether a parenting practice represents a cultural
difference or an instance of abuse or neglect.
Reducing the Risk of Abuse and Neglect — (Unit 6)
June 5, 2010
Infant and toddlers are most at risk for abuse and neglect. This training will provide information on the prevalence of abuse and neglect in infant/toddler ages,
the impact of maltreatment on child development, strategies for how to best respond to troubled parent-child interaction and suspected abuse, and how to discuss
these matters with parents in a supportive way to prevent potential harm to the child.
Toddler Tantrums – What can you do? Supportive Responses to Troubled Parent-Child Interactions — (Unit 7)
June 19, 2010
Child care professionals have a unique window into families’ strengths and challenges. We often wonder — how can we best support warm
and nurturing relationships between parents and child? When observing troubled interactions we are sometimes at a loss of what to do.
This training will discuss ways to help families develop positive parenting, and when and how to intervene when we see a troubled interaction
between a parent and child.
Understanding & Dealing with Challenging Behaviors of Toddlers, Twos & Threes — (Unit 8)
June 26, 2010
Challenging behavior in infant-toddler child care is inevitable. What is the best way to respond to a child who is preverbal,
does not yet use logic, and whose memory can't yet retain rules and limits? This training will discuss strategies for analyzing and
coping with challenging behavior and how to discuss the children's challenging behavior with parents.
