Preventing Child Abuse Training Series – Northern Virginia
This training series of seven different topics is being offered for both training hours (up to 35 hours) and CEU credits (up to 3.5 CEUs). You may register for any number of sessions, but those who complete all seven sessions can earn 3.5 full CEUs for no additional fee. Cost is $15 per class. All classes are offered at least twice. All Trainings are from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and include a 1 hour "on your own" lunch break.
Building Relationships with Parents and Families (Unit 1)
Building a strong relationship with parents will help ensure quality care. Learn how you can help parents grow in their challenging new role as parents of young children. Learn ways to get parents more involved in your program, and ways teachers, providers and parents can work together to support children's development.

Building a Healthy Brain: Giving Children a Foundation for Lifelong Success (Unit 2)
The first three years of life are critical to brain development. Learn how to support and promote healthy brain development by using the 5 R's: Relationships, Respect, Repetition, Routines, and Responsive Interactions. We'll also discuss the effect of negative experiences and abuse on brain development.

Social Emotional Development in Infants, Toddlers and Their Families — (Unit 3)
Social-emotional development begins at birth. The foundation laid in the first three years helps a child develop meaningful relationships and supports learning. When children have difficulty acquiring social-emotional skills, they are at increased risk emotionally, developmentally and academically. We will examine the relationship between stages of child development and parent development, and how to assist young children in acquiring social-emotional skills.

Understanding Temperament for Parents and Providers — (Unit 4)
Temperament is a child's way of interacting with the world around them. It is not "good" or "bad" but "goodness of fit" to parents and caregivers' own temperament is important to avoid personality clashes and behavior difficulties. Increasing our understanding of temperament, including our own temperaments will help support a child's healthy development.

Reducing the Risk of Abuse and Neglect (Unit 6)
Infant and toddlers are most at risk for abuse and neglect. This training will provide information on the prevalence of abuse and neglect in infant/toddler ages, the impact of maltreatment on child development, strategies for how to best respond to troubled parent-child interaction and suspected abuse, and how to discuss these matters with parents in a supportive way to prevent potential harm to the child.

Toddler Tantrums – What can you do? Supportive Responses to Troubled Parent-Child Interactions (Unit 7)
Child care professionals have a unique window into families’ strengths and challenges. We often wonder — how can we best support warm and nurturing relationships between parents and child? When observing troubled interactions we are sometimes at a loss of what to do. This training will discuss ways to help families develop positive parenting, and when and how to intervene when we see a troubled interaction between a parent and child.

Understanding & Dealing with Challenging Behaviors of Toddlers, Twos & Threes – (Unit 8)
Challenging behavior in infant-toddler child care is inevitable. What is the best way to respond to a child who is preverbal, does not yet use logic, and whose memory can't yet retain rules and limits? This training will discuss strategies for analyzing and coping with challenging behavior and how to discuss the children's challenging behavior with parents.

Located at The Childcare Network
Participants will receive two-year First Aid & CPR certification through Medic First Aid. This certification meets the requirements for state licensed child care programs in Virginia. Cards will be distributed at the end of class. A minimum of 6 people are required to hold class. Registration fee will be returned ONLY if class is cancelled. Please dress in comfortable clothing.

Child Care College Scholarship Programs
Scholarships that pay 100% of the tuition for early childhood courses at local community
colleges are available through the Virginia Dept of Social Services. To be eligible,
you must be working or planning to work in a child care home, center, preschool or before

qualify for a scholarship through TEACH. Visit the
